Greetings, fellow wanderer! If you’re an American dreaming of distant lands, but the absence of a passport has you feeling grounded, fear not! Your travel dreams are still within reach. As your travel agent, I’m here to share some exciting alternatives that will have you packing your bags and jetting off on your next adventure.
While technically we can plan a cruise vacation that begins and ends in the same U.S. port without a passport, I highly recommend stepping on a cruise ship that will be leaving the United States ONLY if you have a passport. Too many things could go wrong — like missing your ship while in the Bahamas, or having an emergency illness in St. Lucia, or an emergency at home that would require you to fly home…without that passport, how would you get back without countless hours of red tape with the US Department of State? It’s doable, but I highly discourage it. (Even Alaska cruises visit Canada, so require that passport if there’s a problem.)
I thought that I would put together a list of my top five things to do that are adventurous, and do not require a passport. Also — get your passport….with that document you can literally see the world. But, until your passport arrives, enjoy the beauty of America!

1. Explore the beauty of the Mississippi River
Cruising the Mississippi River and its tributaries with American Cruise Lines is an extraordinary journey through history. From Colonial pioneers to entrepreneurs, much of America’s story has been forged – or fought – along their length. The Mississippi River is navigable from New Orleans, Louisiana to the Twin Cities of Minnesota, and forms a maritime corridor through the U.S. heartland. American Cruise Lines’ modern fleet of brand new contemporary riverboats and traditional paddlewheelers go even further, with cruises exploring the Ohio, Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers, each offering its own unique view of the American South and Midwest.
From Mark Twain’s hometown of Hannibal, MO to exploring Civil War history in Vicksburg; experiencing the heart of American music in Memphis and Nashville while enjoying the exciting flavors of creole cuisine, the Mississippi River region is a premier cruising destination. Explore it today aboard the most modern fleet of small ships.

Beginning and ending in the vibrant city of New Orleans, this incredible journey celebrates the rich heritage and festive spirit of a region where music is the common language and history can be found around every bend in the river. Travel in the comfort of our new fleet as you discover fascinating port towns, including Natchez, with a unique blend of African, British, and French culture. As well as Baton Rouge, the heart and soul of Louisiana.
Savor authentic Cajun and Creole cuisine, embodying the influences of the fascinating people who live there. Explore elegant antebellum homes and notable landmarks brimming with history, led by a local guide who provides an insider’s perspective.
Back on board, be pampered by our gracious crew or find solace as you relax in your spacious stateroom and relish the rolling river views.
2. EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF THE UNITED STATES WITH A CANYON COUNTRY ADVENTURE!

You’ll want to warm up your vocal cords before testing the acoustics at the most mesmerizing canyons of Arizona and Utah. Beauty, awe, and wonder echo from Phoenix to Las Vegas as you journey to three fascinating national parks as well as the stunning cliffs of Lake Powell and the unique sandstone formations inside the Navajo Nation. In addition to seeing the sun rise and set in the magnificent Grand Canyon, you’ll also watch the brilliant rays dance across the wondrous walls of Utah’s Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, and Lake Powell’s Antelope Slot Canyon. Highlights on this national parks vacation and tour of canyon country include a 4-wheel drive excursion with a Navajo guide to see the monoliths, buttes, and mesas of Monument Valley, a visit to the cactus-studded scenery of Sedona, and just enough time in “Sin City” to avoid any deep trouble. Helloooooo!

For more information about this amazing tour, check out this past blog article. Visiting these iconic destinations in America’s West was truly one of my most favorite vacations, and by touring with an escorted guide, you’ll never have to worry about driving to the next destination, not having GPS because of the remote locations, and being able to see & experience everything without stress. It’s truly the way to see a destination.

Want to make your experience even more special? Just let me know that you would like to add the Dolphin Experience to your package!
Get nose to bottlenose with a new friend that will live in your heart forever when you experience the highlight of your day, a one-on-one dolphin encounter.
Get ready to become one of the pod at the best place to swim with dolphins, Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida! Once you arrive, you’ll receive a time for your interaction with their dolphins leaving the rest of your visit to simply enjoy your day in paradise.
The signature dolphin swim experience begins with your group meeting a dolphin in one of their crystal clear swimming areas. Next, one of their animal care specialists will teach you all about dolphin habits, behaviors, their incredible communication abilities, and the relationships they build on a daily basis with these incredible animals. After that, each group member will get a chance to individually interact with a dolphin and learn about that dolphin’s personality through behaviors.
And, all of this is located in Orlando, very close to Discovery Cove’s sister park, Sea World.

4. DISCOVER U.S. TERRITORIES!
Did you know that there are U.S. territories that don’t require a passport for entry? Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are just a couple of examples. These tropical paradises offer a taste of the Caribbean without the need for international travel documents. Enjoy the sun-soaked beaches, rich history, and unique local flavors without leaving the U.S. passport-free zone.

PUERTO RICO — The intriguing Caribbean island and U.S. territory of Puerto Rico offers diverse vacation experiences to thrill every sort of traveler. Here, you’ll find the lush El Yunque tropical rainforest, magnificent beaches, an array of dining options to satisfy the most discerning palate, and historic Old San Juan in the island’s capital city.
The island is a territory of the United States discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, just one year after he discovered the Americas. He called it San Juan Bautista in honor of John the Baptist.
Every town in Puerto Rico celebrates its own Fiestas Patronales, Saint’s Day, with religious processions plus parades, games, rides, regional food, and entertainment. Each town has its own festival, which occurs on different days every single month. So, you can usually find one happening during your Puerto Rican holiday.

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS — Experience the islands’ colorful multi-cultural history along with its vibrant aqua seas, sumptuous cuisine and lively calypso beat. With no passport required for U.S. citizens traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands, this is an ideal choice for a seaside escape.
The Quelbe style of folk music, with roots in Africa and Europe, is the official traditional music of the Virgin Islands.
Some favorite menu items include pumpkin fritters, kallaloo (similar to gumbo), potato stuffing and red grout (a tapioca dish introduced by the Danes).
All of the U. S. Virgin Islands combined measure a mere 133 square miles. Clearly, they are worth their weight in gold, since the United States purchased the islands in 1917 from Denmark for $25 million in gold.

5. NEW ENGLAND’S CLASSIC FALL FOLIAGE

I’ve got another escorted tour on this list, because I believe in them so much. Why wouldn’t you want to leave the driving & worries to someone else while on vacation, especially when wanting to see the beautiful views of New England!

Mother Nature meets our Founding Fathers on this electrifying fall foliage tour through historic and bucolic New England. As you witness the blazing reds, oranges, and yellows of autumn’s turning leaves, you’ll also be introduced to the country’s early trailblazers and most curious of characters. Trace the steps of Paul Revere, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin through the storied streets of Boston. Walk the halls of Cornelius Vanderbilt’s opulent Newport mansion. Feast your eyes on the world’s largest collection of Rockwell originals at the Norman Rockwell Studio & Museum in Stockbridge. Yet no palette is as bright as the fiery leaves of the oaks, poplars, and maples that line the striking Maine coastline, adorn the rocky headlands of Acadia National Park, and shelter the quaint, covered-bridge countryside of Vermont and New Hampshire. This is leaf peeping and sightseeing at its absolute finest.
