When people ask me which river cruise line I recommend most often, my answer comes without hesitation.
Avalon Waterways.
As I write this, (August 2, 2026) I’m aboard my fourth Avalon Waterways cruise, sailing the beautiful Lower Danube through Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Hungary. Even more telling, I’ve already booked two more Avalon cruises for next year. I think that says more than any brochure or advertisement ever could.
As both a traveler and a travel advisor, I’ve experienced many different cruise lines over the years. Every company has its strengths, but Avalon is the one I continue to come back to. After four cruises, I can honestly say it feels less like trying a vacation and more like returning to a place that simply fits the way I love to travel.
Small Ships That Feel Like Home
One of the first things people notice about river cruising is the size of the ship.
Avalon’s Suite Ships typically welcome around 150 guests. Instead of crowds, long lines, and thousands of passengers, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere where the crew quickly learns your name, your favorite drink, and even how you take your morning coffee.
By the second or third day, it feels less like you’re staying in a hotel and more like you’re visiting friends who happen to have one of the best views in Europe.
That personal attention has been remarkably consistent on every Avalon cruise I’ve taken.
The Panorama Suite Still Impresses Me
After four cruises, you’d think the excitement of walking into my suite would wear off.
It hasn’t.
Avalon’s Panorama Suites remain one of my favorite features of river cruising. The wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows open into what Avalon calls an Open-Air Balcony, creating an incredible connection to the scenery outside. Even better, the beds face the windows, so each morning begins with a completely different view.
Whether it’s vineyards, medieval villages, dramatic cliffs, or castles overlooking the river, waking up to Europe outside your window never gets old.
It’s About More Than the Destinations
Of course, Europe is spectacular.
But what continues to impress me is how Avalon makes experiencing those destinations so easy.
You unpack once, settle into your suite, and each morning you wake up somewhere new. There are no hotel changes, no hauling luggage across train stations, and no worrying about transportation between cities.
Instead, the journey itself becomes part of the vacation.
Many river ships dock right in the heart of town, making it incredibly easy to step off the ship and begin exploring. It’s one of my favorite parts of river cruising and something that simply isn’t possible on large ocean ships.
Food Worth Looking Forward To
One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “How’s the food?”
The answer is simple. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back.
Every day features a menu inspired by the region you’re sailing through, so you’ll often have the opportunity to try local specialties alongside familiar favorites. Over the course of four cruises, I’ve enjoyed everything from beautifully prepared seafood and incredible soups to regional dishes that introduced me to flavors I might never have ordered on my own.
One thing I especially appreciate is that if nothing on the evening menu catches your eye, Avalon always offers dependable alternatives. You can order grilled salmon, grilled chicken breast, or a beef tenderloin. And let me tell you, that beef tenderloin has become one of my favorite meals on board. I’ve ordered it more than once, and it has been consistently excellent every single time.
Breakfast is another highlight for me. Whether I’m enjoying made-to-order eggs, fresh fruit, pastries, or simply a quiet cup of coffee while watching the scenery drift past, it’s a wonderful way to begin each day.
Whether you’re enjoying lunch after a morning excursion or a leisurely dinner with a glass of wine, every meal feels like part of the vacation.
The Little Things That Keep Me Coming Back
Sometimes it’s the little touches that make the biggest impression.
One of my favorite places on the ship is the self-service coffee machine in the Panorama Lounge. I’ve started calling it the “magic coffee machine” because it seems to make just about every specialty coffee you could want. Cappuccino, latte, espresso, hot chocolate…it’s available whenever the mood strikes, and I admit I’ve become a frequent visitor.
Another favorite is Avalon’s Be Well beverage station. Throughout the day you’ll find infused waters that are both refreshing and flavorful. My personal favorite is Pink Positive, a grapefruit-infused water that I’ve enjoyed every day on this cruise. It’s such a small detail, but it’s one of those thoughtful touches that makes life onboard feel just a little more special.
These aren’t the features you’ll usually see on the front page of a brochure, but after four Avalon cruises, they’re exactly the kinds of details I’ve come to appreciate the most.
Excursions That Match Your Travel Style
One thing I’ve come to appreciate more with each cruise is Avalon’s variety of included excursions.
Not everyone wants to experience a destination the same way. Some guests enjoy classic guided sightseeing, while others prefer active walks or opportunities to explore on their own.
Avalon offers those choices, allowing each traveler to experience destinations in a way that fits their own interests and activity level.
I’ve found that flexibility makes every cruise feel a little more personal.
Real Travel Isn’t Always Perfect
One thing this cruise has reminded me is that travel occasionally requires flexibility.
Like much of Europe, parts of the Danube have experienced unusually low water levels this season, which resulted in a few itinerary adjustments before we even boarded the ship.
While changes like this can sound concerning, I was genuinely impressed by how professionally Avalon handled everything. Communication was clear, the logistics were well organized, and once we were onboard, the experience continued to feel seamless.
It’s a good reminder that sometimes the true measure of a travel company isn’t when everything goes exactly as planned. It’s how they respond when nature has other ideas.
Why I Already Booked Two More Cruises
After four Avalon cruises, I no longer recommend them simply because I’ve sailed with them.
I recommend them because they’ve earned my confidence.
The exceptional crew, beautifully designed ships, outstanding food, comfortable accommodations, thoughtfully planned excursions, and relaxed atmosphere have remained consistently excellent every single time I’ve sailed.
That’s exactly why I’ll be be sailing with Avalon twice again next year, first on my Tulip Time cruise through the Netherlands and Belgium, and later on a bucket-list journey through Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Mekong River.

Europe’s rivers have a way of slowing life down just enough to truly appreciate each destination. You can watch castles pass by from your bed, enjoy lunch while sailing through beautiful countryside, step off the ship right in the heart of a historic city, and end the evening with a wonderful dinner and good conversation.
For me, that’s what makes river cruising so special.
And after four unforgettable cruises with Avalon Waterways, I have a feeling I’m only getting started.
