Kenneth’s Garden Journal

July 12, 2026

Today’s focus was caring for and enjoying the gardens.

I thoroughly watered the Pet Cemetery Garden, Back Garden, and Butterfly Garden using water treated with Epsom salts to give the plants a boost during the heat of summer.

The Pet Cemetery continues to take on a life of its own. I found a permanent home for the little stone urn I discovered at the thrift store for just $7. Rather than placing it on a pedestal, I nestled it into the foliage where it looks as though it has been there for many years.

I also moved Mom’s turtle and frog sculptures from the front yard into the cemetery. They fit naturally among the plants and add another layer of whimsy to the garden.

Thumper’s headstone has been installed beneath the rabbit statue, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The rabbit almost appears to be standing watch over the marker.

Rosie the pig and Carver the squirrel are both on their way and should arrive this week. Rosie will become the fifth resident of the cemetery, while Carver will introduce the first of my custom humorous epitaphs.

I’m also continuing to dream about future additions. The teapot fountain remains my next major project for the cemetery. Nearby, I’d like to place an old shovel with a crocheted green scarf draped over the handle and a weathered lantern as a subtle tribute to the Haunted Mansion caretaker at Disneyland. One day, I’d also like to add a few vintage teacups on garden stakes for the birds.

The Butterfly Garden continues to grow with the addition of another plumeria, ‘Dusk,’ butterfly weed, milkweed, and newly planted Thunbergia, Cleome, and balsam seeds that are waiting to germinate. The first monarch caterpillar has already found the milkweed, which feels like a wonderful sign that the garden is beginning to fulfill its purpose.

The mango tree is now planted in the front yard, where it will eventually provide both fruit and a little more privacy from the street.

Garden Highlight

Today, it occurred to me that the Pet Cemetery no longer feels like a new project.

It feels like a place.

A place with stories, memories, a little humor, and a little mystery.

And somehow, I think that’s exactly what I was hoping to create. 🌿
