Did I Just Eat The Best Hamburger Ever?

The other day, I visited Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  I’ve always loved this park, and while I would love to see some additional rides, this park remains one of my favorite places at Walt Disney World. I really am excited about the upcoming opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and the more I read about Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the more I believe I’m going to love it! I can’t wait! I was able to watch testing of the Disney Skyliner  the other day! This is another thing I cannot wait to open. I’m excited for a new transportation system at Walt Disney World. Anything to keep some buses off of the roads is a great thing.

I’ve read that Disney will be able to load more people per minute than they can a bus, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that this will be an efficient way to travel while vacationing at the World! My next (scheduled) stay is this September…I’m hoping to not only see Galaxy’s Edge, but take a ride on the new Disney Skyliner as well!

So, getting back to “the best hamburger”…

I found myself hot, hungry and thirsty the other day while touring Disney’s Hollywood Studios. And I didn’t have any reservations for dining.  Not a great combination.  I was walking by the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant and thought I would take a chance on getting a car for dinner. Yes, a car! When you eat at the Sci-Fi you sit at a table made from a car. The Cast Member at the podium said that she could sit me within the next 30-40 minutes and that I could wait next door in the bar. She asked for my cell phone number and said I would receive a text when my car was ready.

I saw some self-serve popcorn on one side of the podium, and on the other a tall container of ice water with paper cone cups. (We need to remember this on hot days…just come in and grab some water to stave off dehydration!) I grabbed some popcorn and some water to stave off the hunger & thirst for a bit. About the time I ate about 10 kernels of popcorn, I got a text that my table was ready. So, instead of waiting 30-40 minutes for a table, I waited about 3 minutes! Awesome!

A parking attendant showed me to my car. This is a very cool restaurant! It looks as if you are eating at a 1950’s era Drive-In. On the screen is about a 45 minute loop of the cheesiest, fun and geekiest sci-fi B-movies from the 1950’s! Even Walt Disney and Garco make an appearance!

It wasn’t long before my car hop came by and took my order. He suggested that I try one of his favorites, the “featured” hamburger. It’s on the menu as “Sci Fi Seasonal Specialty Burger”. The day I was there, the “Southern Burger” was the specialty. The car hop described it as a burger topped with pimento cheese, bacon and a fried green tomato. Now, for the first 48 years of my life, I grew up on the south side of Atlanta.  Having visited The Varsity countless of times in downtown Atlanta, I was very familiar with putting Pimento Cheese on a burger.  The Varsity has been doing that for a very, very long time.

Oh, yeah, I was ordering the Southern Burger! It came with fries and I also ordered a Coca Cola. After I placed my order, my eyes turned to the screen and I enjoyed the 1950’s B-Movie clips.

My food arrived before I knew it. I loved passing the time watching these old movie clips! I recognized a few of the films…especially Plan 9 From Outer Space. I think I have that on DVD somewhere!

Honestly, the picture doesn’t do the Southern Burger justice. I had to use my flash, as it was dark (speaking of that, I recommend using your phone to read the menu…my old eyes needed the extra light! Lol) Even though the picture looks like a run of the mill hamburger, this was actually one of the best, if not the the best, burger I’ve ever had at Walt Disney World. It was very juicy, & the combination of pimento cheese and bacon was just perfect. The fries were very good as well, especially when dipped in the Heinz ketchup! I completely finished my meal, and was stuffed. To be perfectly honest, the 50’s Sci Fi Dine In has never been one of my “go-to” restaurants at Disney. I usually go to the Fifties Prime Time Cafe if I can get in. (I LOVE their fried chicken!) This meal, however, has changed my mind…I’ve actually been thinking of driving up to Disney’s Hollywood Studios just to have this burger again. I asked the waiter, and he said they change the featured burger “seasonally”, so it should change every couple of months or so (according to him). I hope he’s wrong! Next time, not only will I order the Southern Burger, but I’ll order one of their milkshakes I saw the car next to me getting…they looked delicious! So, if your following me on Facebook, do not be surprised if you see me in the near future checking in to the Sci Fi Dine In.  I hear that Southern Burger calling my name.
