Boma — One of my favorite vacation “things” at Walt Disney World!

Hi Everyone!  Today’s blog is going to be a bit different.  I’m going to tell you about my favorite restaurant at Walt Disney World, that just happens to be at one of my favorite Disney Resort.  Boma is located downstairs from the lobby at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge (Jambo House).  It’s a self-serve buffet style restaurant that serves breakfast & dinner.

Under thatched roofs, savor vibrant flavors from over 50 African countries—along with favorite American classics.

Greet your day with a cup of full-bodied Kenyan AA coffee, tropical juice and a bountiful breakfast buffet. Selections may include made-to-order omelets, French toast, African pastries, carved ham, fresh fruit and corn beef bobotie—a type of South African quiche.

At dinner, watch chefs prepare grilled seafood, roasted meats, vegetarian specialties, fresh salads and house-baked pastries in the onstage kitchen. Kids can enjoy options like chicken nuggets, while Guests 21 years of age and up delight in unique South African wines—many of which are available by the glass.

Reservations are recommended and can be made up to 180 days prior to your visit.

Boma opens for dinner at 5:00 PM.  I usually try and get my reservation right at 5:00 so that I can watch the drummers open the restaurant with their welcome show.  I filmed a bit of it that you can watch below.  You don’t have to have reservations to see the drummers, just be in the restaurant’s lobby a few minutes before 5:00PM…or better yet, watch from Victoria Falls, Jambo House’s own bar, which is located off of the lobby with views (and smells!) of Boma below.

I’m going to highlight three of my favorite things at Boma.  The first is their Butternut Squash soup.  If they are serving it the night you visit, don’t pass this up.  In fact, all of their soups that I’ve tried are really, really good.  Just because the name of the soup is odd, or is something that you wouldn’t normally try…give it a sample.  You’ll be glad that you did.  If you would like, call the restaurant before making a reservation, and they can usually tell you the “soup schedule”.  The soups have their own fans, they’re that good.  Remember the “soup guy” from Seinfeld?  The soups from Boma are how I imagined his soups tasted.

The Pasta Salad is not to be missed.   It’s tasty, unique & delicious.  I’ve asked the servers at the restaurant for the recipe, and the chef visited my table, glad that I liked it so much.  He then gave me the recipe, but to be honest, my version isn’t as good as theirs!  Thankfully, the pasta salad has been on the buffet every time I’ve visited.  I hope it never goes away.

The Zebra Domes are one of Boma’s signature desserts.  Make sure that you save a bit of room at the end of your meal for one or two. (or three!).  Or, just start your meal with one.  No one is going to stop you.  These are sweet, creamy & luscious; and I love them.  They are so popular, that you can purchase them in Jambo House’s quick service eatery, The Mara.  In fact, I’ve actually made a special trip to Animal Kingdom Lodge just to pick up a few of these treats.

Boma is best when you go in with an open mind and an adventurous palate.  But, if you are a picky eater, you will find PLENTY to choose from!  There will be items you’ve never heard of.  Give them a try…you may just find something that you didn’t know that you liked.  To be perfectly honest, I’ve tried very little here that I didn’t love.

Bonus suggestion:  Visit the “children’s” section and grab a couple of the mini corn dogs.  You are welcome.

The chefs are wonderful to work with at Boma.  They are there onstage to help with suggestions, suggest certain items & to work with food allergies.  In fact all of the chefs at Disney restaurants are very good with allergies.  Just be sure to tell your server what your allergic to when you sit down!

They usually have 2 or 3 different types of hummus.  Their hummus is delicious!

The Pasta Salad is SOOOO good!

Again…DO NOT MISS THE SOUP SELECTIONS.  Try at least two different ones!
