This morning began in Tournus, a riverside village in Burgundy that completely stole my heart. As part of our walking tour, we visited the Abbey of Saint-Philibert, one of the oldest Romanesque churches still standing in France. Its massive stone columns and peaceful interior were genuinely moving. I could see myself living in a place like this—quiet, beautiful, and full of history.

While exploring the town, our guide pointed out one of the region’s most prized residents: the Bresse chicken. These heritage birds are beloved for their rich flavor—but it was their appearance that really stuck with me. She explained that they’re known for having blue feet, white feathers, and a red comb—the colors of the French flag! 💙🤍❤️ Only in France would even the chickens be patriotic.

As we strolled along the Saône river, I was surprised and delighted to find an open-air exhibition dedicated to Jean-Baptiste Greuze, an 18th-century painter born right here in Tournus. Our guide spoke about one of his most famous works, The Broken Eggs, which she explained symbolized the loss of virginity—a subtle, layered meaning I hadn’t considered before. Seeing his work displayed outdoors, right in his hometown, gave me such a sense of connection to this place.

Before heading out for the afternoon, we made a quick stop in the peaceful village of Chapaize to explore its 11th-century church. Our guide warned us about the “busy” road—and we all had a laugh when just three cars passed by during our 20-minute visit. Life moves at a different pace out here.

The highlight of the day was a visit to the Château de Cormatin, a Renaissance-era estate with perfectly restored interiors and the most magical gardens. My favorite part? The labyrinth. It instantly reminded me of the hedge maze from The Shining—though thankfully this one was much more whimsical and far less terrifying! I wandered through it with a smile, half tempted to get lost on purpose. The entire property feels like it was made for daydreaming.

By late afternoon, we were back onboard the ship in Mâcon, which just so happens to be twinned with Macon, Georgia—a fun surprise, since I have friends that live there! I had just enough time to rest (and maybe doze off for a few moments) before enjoying a cheese and mustard tasting arranged by our cruise director. Everything I tried was full of flavor and locally sourced—French food never disappoints.

Dinner tonight was another highlight: fried Camembert with cranberry sauce, velvety pumpkin soup, a perfectly cooked piece of fish, and for dessert, a lovely peach Melba. I shared the meal with some new friends, and we lingered at the table talking for nearly 45 minutes after dessert. It’s those slow, unhurried conversations that make travel so special.

Now, I’m back in my room, wall of windows wide open, watching France float by as we cruise toward Lyon. The lights on the water, the quiet hum of the river… this is the life. 💙🤍❤️
